Isaac Westling and Andrew Firkins recently dedicated their time and expertise as scoring judges at the East Tennessee high school mock trial competition, where they provided valuable feedback and encouragement to participating students. This event, organized by the Knoxville Bar Association’s Barristers, brought together over 150 students from 12 different high schools, giving them the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the legal process and gain hands-on trial practice.
Reflecting on the experience, Isaac Westling shared, “Judging this high school mock trial competition has been an incredible experience, offering a glimpse into the bright future of the legal profession. Watching these students argue their cases with such poise, passion, and professionalism was both inspiring and humbling. It reminded me that hard work and determination can drive success at any stage of life. If this competition is any indication, the next generation of lawyers will undoubtedly uphold the highest standards of our profession.”
The competition followed a robust structure, with teams competing in four preliminary rounds. Sevier County – Purple and Maryville High advanced to the Championship Round, held Sunday, February 23rd. Ultimately, Sevier County – Purple emerged victorious, and both teams will proceed to the State tournament in March.
Positive feedback poured in from coaches, competitors, parents, and attendees who praised the volunteers’ dedication, particularly their willingness to stay after the trials to deliver personalized feedback to individual competitors. Their contributions not only enhanced the event but also made a lasting impact on the student participants, many of whom left with a deeper appreciation for the legal system and new insights into trial practice.
